Is it safe to upload family photos to an AI photo animator?

It can be, if you check a few things before uploading: what the service does with your photos, how long it keeps them, and whether you can delete them yourself. Here is a checklist that works for any tool, and how Incarn, which publishes this site, handles each point.

The checklist, for any service

1. Purpose. The service should say your photos are used to make your animation, not for something else.
2. Retention. Look for written, specific durations, not just "we keep your data as long as necessary".
3. Deletion. You should be able to delete a photo, and your whole account, yourself.
4. Moderation. A serious service blocks abusive uploads automatically.
5. Payment. Payment should go through a known processor, so the service never sees your card number.
6. Who runs it. A legal notice and a contact address should be easy to find.

A word about the people in the photos

Animating a portrait of a great-grandparent is a way to remember them. For photos of living people, ask them first. And keep in mind that an animation is an interpretation by an AI, not a recording: present it as such when you share it.
